Preparing for Your Senior Photo Session | Mount Horeb, Wisconsin Senior Photographer
As your photographer, I want to make sure your senior photo session is an enjoyable experience that results in stunning photos you’ll cherish forever. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you prepare and make the most of our time together.
1. Outfit Planning
The biggest question I hear from clients is “what should I wear?!” Your outfit choices play a huge role in the overall feel of your photos. Here are some tips:
Variety: Bring at least 2-3 different outfits, including casual, semi-formal, and something that reflects your personal style or interests. If your session doesn’t include multiple outfit changes, make sure to pick your absolute favorite option!
Colors and Patterns: Solid colors or subtle patterns work best. Avoid clothing with large logos or overly busy designs.
Comfort: Make sure you feel comfortable and confident in your outfits. This will reflect in your photos. I will have you move around a bit during the session, so it is important you can move comfortably!
Accessories: Don’t forget to bring accessories like a hat, jean jacket, vest, scarf, or jewelry to add some flair.
*Bonus – I have an online tool to help you style your session. Use this link to explore different options depending on your favorite colors and style! (Code to get in is “Senior”)
2. Hair and Makeup
Looking your best will boost your confidence during the shoot:
Professional Help: If you aren’t feeling super confident about doing your own hair and makeup, consider getting your hair and makeup done professionally.
Natural Look: Aim for a natural look that you typically wear! We want you to look like YOU in your photos.
3. Skincare and Rest
A healthy glow starts with good skincare and rest:
Hydration: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to the session.
Skincare Routine: Stick to your regular skincare routine and avoid trying new products right before the shoot.
Sleep: Ensure you get a good night’s sleep before our session to look fresh and vibrant.
4. Props and Personal Items
Incorporating personal items can make your photos more meaningful:
Hobbies and Interests: Bring items related to your hobbies or interests, such as sports equipment, musical instruments, or books.
Achievements: Consider bringing awards, medals, or anything that represents your accomplishments.
Pets: If you want to include a pet, let me know in advance so we can plan accordingly.
Props: I’ve had clients have specific items they want to incorporate like a vintage chair they thrifted or a bouquet of flowers from their garden. Feel free to bring anything like this along–give me a heads-up if possible!
5. Communication
Let’s ensure we’re on the same page:
Share Your Vision: Tell me about any specific ideas, poses, or locations you have in mind. The more I know about what you want, the better I can deliver.
Concerns: If you have any insecurities or areas you’re worried about, let me know. I’m here to make you look and feel your best.
6. Relax and Enjoy
Most importantly, remember to relax and have fun:
Be Yourself: Authenticity shines through in photos. Be yourself and let your personality shine.
Trust Me: Trust that I’m here to capture you at your best. Enjoy the experience, and don’t stress about perfection.
7. Parents/Support People
While I don’t mind having parents or a friend tag along during your session to support you, I want to make sure you are the most comfortable you can be. Parents, please try your best to let your senior be themselves during the session. I know you are trying to help when you tell them to “smile bigger” or “show your teeth” or “stand up straight” but often it adds stress to your senior. I will help guide them through poses and look their best!
Final Thoughts
Preparing for your senior photo session can be a fun and exciting process. By following these tips, you’ll be ready to capture this special milestone in your life. I’m looking forward to working with you and creating beautiful memories together!
